The Gotthelf Art Gallery

Moshe Elimelech, Sharon Ben-Tal, Rhea Carmi, Malka Nedivi, Gali Rotstein, Lidia Shaddow and Guri Stark are examples of the strong and vital part that American Israeli artists play in the contemporary West Coast art scene. Their interests and artwork are diverse and respond to the myriad of issues of contemporary art and life at home and globally. In this exhibition, issues and interpretations of the beauty of the land and the environment are addressed along with aspects of memory, personal identity, heritage, family and abstract expressions of time and change. Together these works add their unique visual voices to life and art in Southern California.

Reception: Wednesday, January 27, 20107:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

For decades, Israelis have moved comfortably between the Jewish state and the United States. Though they have settled in communities throughout the States, many have chosen Southern California, and Los Angeles in particular, to make their new homes. Los Angeles offers a temperate climate, a world-class level of cultural diversity, large established Israeli communities and a smorgasbord of business, technology, educational, social and cultural opportunities.

For artists, the Los Angeles arts scene is a special magnet that encourages diversity of expression and experimentation and rewards innovation. The artists in this exhibition are a strong and vital part of this contemporary artscape, and their artwork offers a diverse and rich response to contemporary art and life in an ever-evolving society. Their work here speaks to issues and interpretations of beauty of the land and the environment. It addresses memory, personal identity and heritage, conditions of a shared humanity and abstract expressions of time and change. Together, their work adds a unique visual voice to the mélange of art and life in Southern California.
